WB - Group Music Video Evaluation

Throughout this task the group I was working within took control of producing and editing the forth section in the video. In this video we used both narrative and performance as it fits the forms and conventions of the indie rock genre that the Black Keys would be categorised into. For the group I was in section, we aimed to create narrative fuzz through editing. We wanted to replicate the psychedelic style of music videos commonly  seen throughout the 1960's. We did this through using the editing technique of video merging. This for me made the piece look individual and artistic. As well as this we also experimented with using slow motion. This was especially useful as I hope to use slow motion within my group when I come to shoot our final piece. This was evident in the shots of Max getting a water balloon thrown at his head in slow motion. On the other hand, when filming again, we should take greater care with props as whilst shooting this video, had damaged water balloons meaning we couldn't get all the shots we would have liked.

We also considered Dyer's paradox of an artist being both ordinary and extra-ordinary at the same time. This was created by wearing school clothes in a very simple location, being a field. This gave the feel of the band seeming rather ordinary. We then created the image of them being extra ordinary by using the editing effects highlighted above along with obscure props such as bongo drums. We also followed his idea of a star image by representing themes of rebellion as well as youth. Having ties wrapped round our heads for the performance part created a sense of rebellion and anti-authoritarianism as we were going against norms within a school. This thus represented our youthfulness along with such themes within the narrative such as love and heartbreak.

A lot can be taken from this task as there were many obstacles we faced throughout the process. As mentioned above, poor care of props led to some shots being abandoned and unused. Along with this, we hadn't checked the camera before going down to shoot, and only realised when we got there, we had no battery. This was something that could have easily been avoided and thus in the future would not make the same mistake. Nevertheless, it enabled me to try new techniques and features, allowing me to have a wider knowledge and experience of using techniques such as slow motion and video merging for when we come to film our final piece.
